Communication Solutions for Gas & Hazardous Worksites
Working in explosive or high-risk environments demands more than just rugged equipment — it requires intrinsically safe communication systems that meet strict international safety certifications.
At Radio Industries, we specialise in providing compliant two-way radios and accessories for hazardous worksites across industries like oil & gas, chemical processing, fuel storage, mining, and hazardous area maintenance.
Our intrinsically safe (IS) radio solutions are certified to ATEX, UL, and IECEx standards, helping your team stay connected, safe, and legally compliant in flammable or volatile environments.

⚠️ Understanding Intrinsically Safe Certifications: ATEX, IECEx & UL
ATEX is a European Union directive that governs equipment used in potentially explosive environments. While not a local Australian requirement, ATEX-certified radios are sometimes specified on multinational projects or at worksites operated by companies with European compliance frameworks. These are commonly used in offshore oil and gas, petrochemical plants, and other facilities where adherence to European safety standards is necessary. ATEX and IECEx share many similarities in technical criteria, but the certification frameworks differ.
IECEx is the most widely accepted certification standard for intrinsically safe equipment in Australia. It is an international system specifically developed to ensure equipment can be safely used in explosive atmospheres, such as those found in mining, oil and gas, chemical processing, and fuel storage sites. IECEx-certified radios are tested to rigorous global standards and are compliant with Australian regulatory requirements. Most Australian mining operations, LNG facilities, and hazardous industrial sites specify IECEx when selecting communication equipment for Zone 0, Zone 1, or Zone 2 areas.
UL is a North American safety certification often required on sites influenced by US-based compliance systems. UL-certified intrinsically safe radios are used in hazardous environments across the United States and Canada, particularly in oil refineries, ethanol production, gas bottling facilities, and pharmaceutical manufacturing. While UL is less common in Australia, it may still be relevant for companies importing equipment from North America or operating under US regulatory influence.
