Mine sites push communication equipment harder than almost any other workplace. Dust, water, vibration, heat and long shifts all take their toll, and teams are spread across open pits, underground workings, processing plants and remote camps. Radio Industries supplies and supports radio communication for underground, open-cut and FIFO operations, from a handful of handhelds to site-wide systems with repeaters.
What mining teams use
Intrinsically safe radios
Certified radios for areas with flammable gas or combustible dust, including the Motorola R7 TIA UL, DP4801Ex and Hytera PD792Ex. See intrinsically safe radios.
Rugged digital handhelds
DMR radios with IP67 or IP68 sealing, loud clear audio and long battery life for full shifts. See handheld radios.
Vehicle and machinery radios
Mobile radios for haul trucks, light vehicles, dozers and service fleets. See vehicle radios.
Hearing protection headsets
3M PELTOR and Sensear headsets that protect hearing and connect to radios around crushers, mills and heavy plant. See headsets.
Push-to-talk over cellular
Talk between camps, exploration crews and other sites over 4G/5G where there is mobile coverage. See PoC radios.
Repeaters and site coverage
Repeaters and linked sites to extend coverage across large or complex mine layouts. See system design.
Safety features that matter on site
Man down and lone worker alerts that raise an emergency call if a worker falls or stops responding
Emergency buttons that send a priority alert, with location on GPS-enabled radios
Intrinsically safe certification for hazardous zones (always check the rating your site requires)
IP67 and IP68 sealing against dust and water
Noise-cancelling audio and headsets for crushers, mills and heavy plant
GPS tracking for supervisors and control rooms
Coverage across large and underground sites
A single handheld rarely covers a whole mine. We plan coverage around your site layout using repeaters, linked sites and, where there is mobile coverage, push-to-talk over cellular. Our system design team can work through coverage, channels and frequency licensing with you.
Supply, programming and support
We program radios to your site channels before dispatch, supply spare batteries, chargers and accessories, and service and repair radios and 3M PELTOR headsets. We supply mining customers in every state, including WA, QLD, NSW, SA, NT and TAS. Contact us for availability, lead times or a suitable alternative.
Mining Two-Way Radios & Communication Systems FAQs
Do I need intrinsically safe radios on a mine site?
It depends on the hazardous area classification of each zone. Areas with flammable gas, vapour or combustible dust need equipment certified for that zone, for example IECEx or ATEX ratings. Check your site's hazardous area requirements and we can recommend radios and accessories to match. See intrinsically safe radios.
Which radios work best underground?
Underground coverage depends on the system more than the radio. Handhelds usually need repeaters or a dedicated underground system to reach beyond line of sight. Tell us about your workings and we will advise on the right setup.
Can radios alert us if a worker is injured or alone?
Yes. Many digital radios support man down and lone worker alerts that send an emergency signal if a worker falls, stops moving or misses a check-in. These features are set up when the radios are programmed.
Do you supply hearing protection headsets that connect to radios?
Yes. We supply 3M PELTOR and Sensear headsets that combine hearing protection with radio communication for noisy plant and processing areas. See headsets.
Can you program radios before they arrive on site?
Yes. Send us your channel plan and we will program radios before dispatch so they are ready to use. Call 1300 266 682 to discuss your site.
