Every hazardous environment is different. Gas groups, dust groups, zones and temperature classes all affect which radio, battery and accessories are safe and compliant on your site. A radio certified for one area may not be suitable for another.
Before ordering online, call our hazardous-area radio specialists on 1300 266 682 or contact us with your site's hazardous area classification. We will confirm the right certification and recommend radios and accessories that match.
Safe communication where flammable gas or dust may be present
Oil and gas facilities, refineries, chemical plants, fuel terminals and grain handling sites can contain explosive atmospheres. Standard radios are not designed for these areas. Radio Industries supplies intrinsically safe radios, headsets and accessories certified for hazardous areas, and helps you match equipment to your site's requirements.
What hazardous sites use
Intrinsically safe radios
IECEx, ATEX and UL913 certified radios from Motorola, Hytera and Entel. See intrinsically safe radios.
Certified accessories
Batteries, speaker microphones and earpieces approved for use with each IS radio.
Hearing protection headsets
Ex-rated 3M PELTOR and Sensear headsets for noisy hazardous areas. See headsets.
Radios for safe areas
Standard digital radios for control rooms, offices and non-hazardous zones. See handheld radios.
Getting the certification right
Check the zone: gas and dust zones need equipment certified for that classification
Use certified accessories: fitting a non-approved battery or microphone can void the rating
Keep records of certificates and serial numbers for audits
Service with care: repairs should keep the equipment within its certification
If you are unsure which rating you need, your site's hazardous area classification is the starting point. Share it with us and we will recommend compliant options.
Supply and support
We program radios before dispatch and supply certified spares and accessories. We supply hazardous-area customers in every state and territory. Contact us for availability, lead times or a suitable alternative.
Two-Way Radios for Gas & Hazardous Worksites FAQs
What does intrinsically safe mean?
An intrinsically safe radio is designed so it cannot release enough energy to ignite a flammable gas or dust atmosphere. It must be certified for the specific hazardous zone where it will be used.
What is the difference between IECEx, ATEX and UL913?
They are certification schemes for equipment used in explosive atmospheres. IECEx is the international scheme commonly required in Australia, ATEX is the European scheme and UL913 is used in North America. Check which your site requires.
Can I use normal accessories with an intrinsically safe radio?
No. Only accessories approved for that radio keep it within its certification. Using a non-approved battery or microphone can make it unsafe.
Do you supply intrinsically safe headsets?
Yes. We supply Ex-rated hearing protection headsets from 3M PELTOR and Sensear. See headsets.
Can you help us choose the right equipment?
Yes. Send us your hazardous area classification and how your teams work, or call 1300 266 682, and we will recommend compliant radios and accessories.
