Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need a licence to use a UHF radio in Australia?

No. UHF CB radios operating on the 80-channel public band (476.4250–477.4125 MHz) are covered by ACMA’s Citizens Band Radio Stations Class Licence, so there’s no cost or application required. You just need equipment that’s type-approved and carries the Regulatory Compliance Mark. Commercial UHF radios operating outside this band do require an individual ACMA licence — our team can help you work out which applies to your setup.

What is the range of a UHF radio?

Handheld UHF radios typically reach 3–5km in built-up or bushy areas, and up to around 15km in open, flat terrain with a clear line of sight. Vehicle-mounted units with a higher-gain antenna generally perform better again, and repeater channels can extend range significantly in hilly or mountainous regions.

What's the difference between UHF CB and commercial UHF radios?

UHF CB radios share a licence-free public band, which is free to use but can suffer from congestion in busy areas. Commercial UHF radios operate on individually licensed frequencies, giving you a clearer, private channel free from public chatter — better suited to businesses needing consistent, interference-free communication across a site or fleet.

What's the difference between "UHF" and "UHF CB"?

People often use these interchangeably, but they’re not quite the same thing. UHF (Ultra High Frequency) simply refers to a frequency type — in Australia, roughly 400–520MHz. When someone asks for “a UHF radio” without further detail, they’re often referring to a commercial UHF radio, which can be licensed to operate anywhere across that wider band. “UHF CB” specifically means the Citizens Band radios operating on the public 80-channel UHF band, which is licence-free. In short: every UHF CB radio is a UHF radio, but not every UHF radio is a UHF CB — if you need a private, licensed channel outside the public CB band, that’s when an individual ACMA licence comes into play.

Why doesn't my UHF radio reach the range advertised on the box?

Manufacturers often list up to 15km range, but that figure comes with real-world caveats worth understanding before you buy. Radio range works a lot like line of sight: picture standing on a flat beach at average eye height (around 1.7–1.8m) — the horizon is only around 4.5–5km away. That’s roughly the realistic range of a standard 5-watt UHF CB radio on flat, obstacle-free ground with no elevation advantage. The 15km figures on packaging are usually achieved from an elevated position — hilltop to hilltop, for example — with a clear, unobstructed line of sight. Lower-wattage radios fall short of even that, since range scales directly with transmit power, and terrain works against you the same way it works for you: hills, buildings, and dense bush between two radios can cut range down to a few hundred metres. If you genuinely need more range than a standard 5W UHF CB radio delivers, we’d usually recommend a PoC (Push-to-Talk over Cellular) radio, which uses mobile data instead of radio waves and isn’t limited by line of sight, a VHF radio for better performance over open terrain in some conditions, or adding a repeater to relay your signal between two points.

Is there an official UHF CB channel for 4WDing, camping, or convoys?

Not officially. Despite what you’ll see on plenty of other sites, there’s no channel legally designated for specific groups or activities like 4WD touring or camping — what exists instead are channels that have become common practice over time, purely by convention. The only channels with an actual legislated purpose are Channel 5 and Channel 35, reserved strictly for emergencies, and these should be left clear unless you genuinely need help. For a breakdown of which channels are commonly used for what (by convention, not by law), see our full UHF CB Channel List.
